11:00 a.m. Fitting healthy fats into your marathon training Mike Haddow, Nutrition Expert and Personal Trainer, GoodLife Fitness.
Fueling the body with healthy fats while training leads to an optimal performance on race day. Mike Haddow will explain the physiology of training in a fat-burning zone to improve fat metabolization capabilities during high glycolytic exercise. He will also discuss the long-term effects of consuming large quantities of simple carbohydrates as a sole energy source for endurance training. Mike is a level 3 PT with GoodLife and the personal trainer/chef to David Patchell-Evans and Silken Laumenn.
12:00 p.m. Ignoring the Impossible Dane Rauschenberg, extreme athlete who ran 52 marathons in 52 weekends with a 3:21 average.
To race a marathon, or to cover long distances in fast times, we are told rest and recovery are as key to our training as the running itself. Dane Rauschenberg, just after running for two years, and not knowing he had Gilbert’s Syndrome, a liver disorder which limits recovery from strenuous activity, decided to turn that logic on its head in 2006. Since then he has been doing it time and time again in events worldwide. Listen to how a one-time 235lb collegiate rugby player and former golden Gloves boxer shows us all how to push our own boundaries as far as possible.
1:00 p.m. In a world of their own World Championship Ultra Marathoner Catrin Jones, Olympic Swimming Medallist Ryan Cochrane, Xterra/Multisport Cross World Champion Melanie McQuaid, and Olympic Race Walker Evan Dunfee What does it take to be an endurance athlete at the elite level? What are the differences and similarities in training and racing different sports? Race announcer Steve King emcees a multi-disciplined panel of local elite athletes. Featuring Catrin Jones, 2013 and 2010 winner of the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon and bronze medalist in the 2015 Doha 50K World Championships; swimmer Ryan Cochrane, Olympic and World Championship silver medalist and Commonwealth and Pan American gold medalist; Melanie McQuaid, three-time Xterra World Champion/two-time Multisport/Cross World Champion/six-time Half Ironman Champion, and Evan Dunfee, Gold Medalist in the 20km walk at the 2015 Pan American Games, and 4th in the 50km at the 2016 Olympic Games.
2:00 p.m. Adjusting goals and getting back to competition, Jen Segger, extreme adventure racer, endurance coach, holistic sport nutritionist and mom
Fifteen years ago when the world of adventure racing reached its zenith Jen Segger started her journey as a distance runner. Joining Salomon Running, she ran some of the world’s most challenging ultras amongst the world’s best runners for over ten years. She has adventured, raced and coached around the world in some of the harshest and most challenging environments. She holds the female record for the 47Km Juan de Fuca (West Coast) Trail and this year won the four-day Mayan Mountain Adventure Race and the three-day Japan Adventure Race. Jen is a mom to an adventurous five-year-old boy who has spent most of his life accompanying mom around the world at epics and challenges. From elite athlete to becoming a mom and returning to athletics and competition, Jen will explain how she has adjusted her goals, training and mindset and embraced a new chapter in her life.
